If you’re new to watercolour or haven’t painted in watercolour for a while, this 4 week course with Ian Scott Massie is just the thing to get you going. Over 4 sessions you will get a comprehensive grounding in the principles of using watercolour.

– Learn the principles of watercolour painting
– Be confident of the materials & equipment needed
– Try out and experiment with different techniques
– Be guided through the processes involved and be inspired!

Over the 4 sessions you will try out different techniques and apply them to your paintings week by week, including a “homework” project. There will be plenty of one-to-one support available.

What to expect

A weekly course at ArtisOn is designed to provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create and develop your skills. The weekly format allows you to develop your work and ideas between sessions. You are more able to work at your own pace and really feel you have made progress between the first and last session.
You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors, plus the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas and experiences. There may be two courses going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the others are up to!

Full day weekly workshops

We encourage you to arrive at 9.30am to allow time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning workshops at 10am. There will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Lunch is usually around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a delicious homemade 2 course lunch. There will be a further afternoon break with tea or coffee and cake. All food and refreshments are included in the price of the workshop.

Half day weekly workshops

We encourage you to arrive at 9.00am to allow time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning your workshop at 9.30am.. We always have a mid-session break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. All refreshments are included before and during the session each week although lunch is not.

We often run half day workshops consecutively on one day. Therefore the finish time given is fairly crucial. We will do our best to ensure your session does not overrun.

What you’ll need to bring with you

If you do have your own equipment, the list below will be required. If you don't have all this, there will be some materials available to either buy or borrow.

Boards will be provided but if you have a support that you normally use, bring it along.
Plates and a few palettes will be available but if you have one, please bring it
A selection of watercolour brushes including a large round or flat brush.
A pencil, rubber and small sketch pad. Masking tape.
A selection of colours, preferably in tube form, which are of reasonably good quality plus a tube of white gouache. Please avoid own brand or discount store paints - the better the quality the more pleased you'll be with the results.
At least five sheets of good quality watercolour paper - no smaller than 10” x 8” of at least 140 lb. (The weight is usually given on the cover of a pad.) We will be doing some fairly wet work so the better the quality and the heavier the paper the better. Crimson & Blake or Crawford & Black papers have proved unequal to the job on previous workshops!
If you have stretched your paper beforehand (something I don't do) please bring some unstretched sheets as well.

A small selection of paints will be on sale if you need to replenish your supplies.
