Using light and colour to depict images and stories, stained glass has illuminated our lives for centuries. This two day workshop will enable you to create your own leaded stained glass panel roughly the size of a sheet of A4 paper, using traditional methods.

– Learn how to choose the right types of glass
– Create a workable design in stained glass
– Learn how to make templates and cut glass safely
– Work through the process of assembling with lead and soldering your panel

Note that with limited time available, you can expect to complete a design with around 6-10 pieces of glass, depending on experience. Everyone works at a different pace, but this guide should help you focus your ideas on something achievable in the time.

Lead-based products such as lead and solder will be used – these are toxic substances and pregnant women are advised not to handle lead or breathe in fumes.

Please note there is a £25 material charge payable on the day.

What to expect

Time at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all. We provide the environment, space and guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors plus the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas. You can even leave us to clear up the mess! There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to.

We encourage you to arrive at 9.30am. This will allow time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning workshops at 10am. There will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Lunch is usually around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a delicious homemade 2 course lunch. There will be a further afternoon break with tea or coffee and cake. All food and refreshments are included in the price of your workshop.

The finish time given is a target. There is some flexibility depending on how your work is progressing. Depending on the tutor and the group, start times for day 2 can be flexible too.

We aim for your day to be a real treat. You could always learn a new skill in a shed or a draughty village hall with a curly sandwich, but we want you to have more fun than that! So we make sure we provide a day where you will be looked after, with good food, good company and great inspiration!

What you’ll need to bring with you

Please wear sturdy clothing like jeans rather than anything that may get snagged on glass. Much of the work is messy, we have aprons but you may wish to make sure you wear old clothes or do bring your own apron or overalls.

No heels and no open toed shoes or sandals - your feet will need protection!

If you have any design ideas or any examples of work that inspires you, please do bring them along.

We use latex gloves for handling lead when making the panels. If you are allergic to this type of glove please supply your own version.

All other materials and equipment will be supplied for this workshop.

“I have just opened a ArtisOn newsletter to find my stained glass panel on it – wow! …. I had a fantastic 2 days, the company, tutor, facilities and food are first class. You have achieved so much in such a short time, you should be very proud. Please can you put me on the waiting list for the next 2 day stained glass course, I would really like to make another panel to go along side this one. Thanks again”
