Join Marianne for a mindful, relaxing and informative Japanese stitching workshop at ArtisOn.
Discover the traditional Japanese techniques of sashiko and boro, using authentic materials, templates and tools to create beautiful and bold decorative stitch patterns.
Sashiko, which literally translates as ‘little stabs’, is an age-old Japanese technique that uses dense hand stitching to strengthen and repair worn textiles. The addition of fabric patches is known as boro, and when these are overstitched with decorative patterns, the result is a beautifully personalised textile with its own story. You’ll learn about the humble origins of sashiko mending, the differences between sashiko and boro, and the many practical and creative ways these techniques can be used today.
Although sashiko is based on simple straight running stitches that anyone can learn, these can be combined to create wonderfully intricate geometric patterns inspired by nature and everyday life, adding character and personal meaning to our belongings.
During the workshop, you’ll begin by practising the basic techniques of freeform sashiko, using informal designs and templates to transfer patterns onto fabric. You’ll then explore Moyozashi (larger-scale patterns using straight and curved lines) and Hitomezashi (single-stitch patterns that build into more intricate designs). This is a skills-based workshop, allowing you to develop your confidence and experiment with different patterns and techniques.
Depending on your experience and the complexity of your designs, you may not complete your pieces during the day, but you’ll take your work home along with the materials, tools and inspiration to continue. Finished pieces could be framed as decorative artwork, made into coasters or placemats, or incorporated into clothing, tote bags, blankets and other textiles.
All materials will be provided, although you’re very welcome to bring along your own favourite sewing supplies, fabric scraps and tools.
The workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those wishing to refresh their hand-sewing skills. Please note that reasonable hand and finger mobility and eyesight are required.
