If you’ve got a sewing machine and some basic sewing skills, you can learn to make your own machine made Roman Blinds. This workshop is both intensive and fun but as one of only four/six participants, you will get plenty of help and support. Carol is in the business of curtains and blinds made to order, and she’ll guide you through the process.

– Learn about the materials needed and where to get them.
– Learn how to calculate material and drops.
– Find out tips and techniques for achieving a professional finish.

Leave with a completed blind – a sampler or one for your home, but please note that in just a day, a blind of no more than 1m wide and 1.25m drop is achievable. You will supply the decorative fabric of your choice.

***YOU WILL NEED TO ENSURE YOUR MACHINE IS IN WORKING ORDER IN GOOD TIME BEFORE THE DAY – CHECK YOU HAVE ALL THE RIGHT CABLES & ANY ATTACHMENTS***

Please note there is a £20 material charge payable on the day.

Click on the title below to find a list of what you’ll need to bring with you if anything.

What to expect

Time at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all and provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors plus the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas and experiences. You can even leave us to clear up the mess! There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to.

Arrive in time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning your session at the appointed time. There will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Lunch is usually around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a homemade 2 course lunch. The main course will be delicious but don’t overdo it as the puds are usually worth waiting for! There will be a further afternoon break with the most wonderful cakes from Roots & Fruits Home Bakery, a North Yorkshire micro-bakery producing handmade bread and cakes. All food and refreshments are included in the price of the workshop.

Finish time is given as a target – there are occasions when the session may overrun so do let us know if you need to be away promptly.

We aim for your day to be a real treat… of course you could always learn a new skill in a shed or a draughty village hall with a curly sandwich, but we want you to have more fun than that! So we make it a day being looked after, with good food, good company and great inspiration!

What you’ll need to bring with you

Please bring with you:

Threaded sewing machine with thread to match your fabric
Wound bobbins with matching thread
Cream thread
Needles
Tape measure
Pins
Quick unpick
General sewing kit

You will be supplied with everything needed to make a cord drawn roman blind on a wooden baton and there will be a £20.00 materials charge for this on the day.

Lining fabric is included but in addition, you will need to supply your own main/face fabric of choice.
This should be a medium plus weight furnishing fabric. Anything too light will be difficult to work with due to the movement in the fabric and this will make it difficult to ensure a good finish on your first attempt.

Please stay within the size guideline of 100cm wide x 125cm drop as your maximum finished size, as larger blinds require larger tables and more time than we have allocated.

***ENSURE YOUR MACHINE IS IN FULL WORKING ORDER BEFORE THE DAY***
IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH YOUR MACHINE WE HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF MACHINES THAT CAN BE BORROWED SO PLEASE LET US KNOW.
