Two-day Series Dates: 18 Nov and 02 Dec 2022

This unique two day workshop with designer Monica Gabb offers a unique and exciting chance to create your own designs, have them digitally printed onto fabric and then use the fabric to make gorgeous hanging decorations.

Day one focuses on the design process. Two weeks later on day two of your workshop you will make your animals using your own designs. In the intervening week your design will be professionally digitally printed onto fabric. The fabric will be used to make up to 6-8 hanging animal decorations which will be embellished and details added.

Day 1 – Simplification, Abstraction and Mark Making
During this session you will:

– Learn about design and the process of simplification of your chosen animal – how to define the shape.
– Making templates and prototypes out of spare fabric.
– Consider any additional elements such as ears/beak etc.
– Exploring shapes, pattern and composition
– Use collage & compose marks and shapes to create your final fabric design ready for scanning.
– See how to take a scan of your design and test on paper.

Monica will then arrange for your designs to be sent away to be professionally digitally printed and finished ready for the second day of the workshop.

Day 2 – Sewing and Making of Your Hanging Decorations
During this session you will:

– Cut your fabric
– Sew your hanging decorations inside out
– Stuff your decorations
– Hand finish and add hanging loops

Please note the material charge will include the digital printing of your fabric which will be approx £20 for 6-8 hanging animals.

What to expect

Time at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all and provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors plus the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas and experiences. You can even leave us to clear up the mess! There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to.

Arrive in time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning your session at the appointed time. There will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Lunch is usually around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a homemade 2 course lunch. The main course will be delicious but don’t overdo it as the puds are usually worth waiting for! There will be a further afternoon break with the most wonderful cakes from Roots & Fruits Home Bakery, a North Yorkshire micro-bakery producing handmade bread and cakes. All food and refreshments are included in the price of the workshop.

Finish time is given as a target – there are occasions when the session may overrun so do let us know if you need to be away promptly.

We aim for your day to be a real treat… of course you could always learn a new skill in a shed or a draughty village hall with a curly sandwich, but we want you to have more fun than that! So we make it a day being looked after, with good food, good company and great inspiration!

What you’ll need to bring with you

Please wear clothes that you don't mind getting messy.
Bring imagery of pets or favourite animals to work from as inspiration
For Day 2, bring a sewing machine if you have one... hand stitching is also an option
