Grab your sewing machine and spend the day with seamstress Claire Humphries and move your sewing skills along to create a stunning A line skirt in a day. Whatever the length you choose, this skirt will fit like a glove!

Using a simple off the shelf skirt pattern Claire will guide you through alterations to the pattern to obtain a perfect fit for you. Two methods for inserting zips (lapped and concealed) will be covered as well as different hemming techniques to create a beautifully fitting and beautifully finished A Line skirt.

The workshop will use McCalls skirt pattern 3341 which you will need to purchase and bring with you.

What to expect

Time at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all. We provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors and the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas. You can even leave us to clear up the mess! There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to.

We encourage you to arrive at 9.30am. This will allow time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning workshops at 10am. There will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Lunch is usually around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a delicious homemade 2 course lunch. There will be a further afternoon break with tea or coffee and cake. All food and refreshments are included in the price of your workshop.

The finish time given is a target. There are occasions when the session may overrun so do let us know if you need to be away promptly.

We aim for your day to be a real treat. You could always learn a new skill in a shed or a draughty village hall with a curly sandwich, but we want you to have more fun than that! So we make sure we provide a day where you will be looked after, with good food, good company and great inspiration!

What you’ll need to bring with you

You will be required to purchase McCalls A Line Skirt Pattern 3341 - A line skirt in 5 lengths.

You will need to select your required skirt length and using the hip and waist measurements on the pattern envelope (not your off the peg size e.g. 14) calculate how much fabric and lining (if using) you will need. The pattern indicates which fabrics are suitable, please avoid checks and plaids as matching patterns can be tricky !

Also you will need a skirt zip. On the day both lapped and concealed methods will be demonstrated. All machines have a regular zip foot as a standard accessory; this is used for the lapped zip. However if you would like to try your hand at a concealed zip you will need to purchase a concealed / invisible zip foot for your machine. The standard skirt zip should be 7” and the concealed 9” you will also need thread to match your fabric.

Waist band stiffening and hooks will be provided.

You will also need to bring your basic sewing kit, sewing machine and instruction manual.

***PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR MACHINE IS IN FULL WORKING ORDER BEFORE THE DAY***
IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH YOUR MACHINE WE HAVE A LIMITED NUMBER OF MACHINES THAT CAN BE BORROWED SO PLEASE LET US KNOW.

“Tutor was really patient, helpful and enthusiastic.  The food was fantastic and it was a great opportunity to spend the day doing something you love.”
