Join Lizzy, a member of the British Society of Master Glass Painters, for a one-day introduction to the fascinating art of painting on glass.
Discover the traditional craft of kiln-fired glass painting, which has adorned sacred and prestigious buildings for over 800 years, featured in the beautiful interiors of the Arts and Crafts movement, and continues to be used in contemporary glass art and design.
Combining practical instruction with an introduction to the history and science of the craft, this workshop will give you the opportunity to experiment with glass paints and techniques and create your own painted glass pieces to take home.
You’ll have the chance to:
-Get hands-on experience with a variety of glass paints and techniques.
-Learn about the history and science of glass painting, including how silver stain revolutionised the craft and gave stained glass its name.
-Explore, mix and apply different vitreous paints, stains and enamels, and discover how they change during kiln firing.
-Explore traditional and contemporary techniques before creating your own small, personalised glass painting.
By the end of the day, you’ll have created two technical sample pieces and a personal painted glass piece measuring approximately 8cm. These can be displayed at home or given as a unique handmade gift.
Make it a two-day stained glass experience!
We’ve scheduled a Stained Glass Panel workshop for the following day, 16 April. If you’d like to take your glass painting further, you can book onto both workshops and incorporate your painted glass piece (or pieces) into your own leaded stained glass panel. This is a wonderful opportunity to combine the two techniques and create a more substantial finished piece featuring your own painted glass.
You can book the glass painting workshop on its own or extend your experience by booking both days.
The workshop is suitable for beginners and those looking to develop their existing skills. No previous experience of glass painting is necessary.
Please note: Some traditional glass paints contain toxic substances, including lead, so appropriate care and protective measures will be used throughout the workshop. This course is recommended for adults aged 18 and over. If you are pregnant or trying to conceive, please contact the tutor before booking to discuss the materials used.
