Have you ever looked at the words you have written in a greetings card and thought ‘I wish my hand writing was more presentable’? Well this course will help you on your journey to improve the way you write those meaningful words. Designed for beginners, this one day course will not only help you improve the script you create, but its meditative process will take you away from the hum drum pressures of everyday living.
Focus is the key to the day as you develop your skills in lettering and flourishes, which could set you on the road to developing your own calligraphic style, opening the doors to the possibilities of creating elaborate and more challenging beautiful works of art in to the realms of illuminated letters.
With her roots in traditional Calligraphy, Karen will guide you as a beginner through the individual strokes and flourishes of a basic scripted alphabet, moving on to connecting letters and starting to understand the basics of setting out a beautifully composed piece of calligraphic design … and all around words! By the end of the day you will be able to set out an elegant address on and envelope, write a beautiful scripted message and see the potential of what is to follow.
Please note there is a £15 material charge payable on the day.
What to expect
Time at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all and provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors plus the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas and experiences. You can even leave us to clear up the mess! There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to.
Arrive in time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning your session at the appointed time. There will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Lunch is usually around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a homemade 2 course lunch. The main course will be delicious but don’t overdo it as the puds are usually worth waiting for! There will be a further afternoon break with the most wonderful cakes from Roots & Fruits Home Bakery, a North Yorkshire micro-bakery producing handmade bread and cakes. All food and refreshments are included in the price of the workshop.
Finish time is given as a target – there are occasions when the session may overrun so do let us know if you need to be away promptly.
We aim for your day to be a real treat… of course you could always learn a new skill in a shed or a draughty village hall with a curly sandwich, but we want you to have more fun than that! So we make it a day being looked after, with good food, good company and great inspiration!
What you’ll need to bring with you
It is suggested that because the inks are permanent, an old shirt OR apron is advisable as ink will ruin a Versace shirt if it gets caught in it! As you will be sat for most of the time, an extra cushion to place at the back of you may help keep you comfortable. Apart from that the only other thing you need to bring is your self and your enthusiasm!
All pens and nibs are provided to use on the day, however there will be a charge of approximately £15 for the worksheets, paper and inks used.
