Build It. Play It. Discover Its Roots.

Join one of the UK’s leading cigar box guitar (CBG) players for a truly unique workshop where you’ll build your own cigar box guitar from scratch and learn to play it by the end of the workshop!

Often called the “poor man’s guitar”, the cigar box guitar has deep roots in American folk and blues traditions. In this hands-on, half-day session, your tutor – an internationally performing CBG musician and passionate advocate for the instrument – will take you on a journey through its cultural history, from its humble origins to its role in modern music.

What to Expect:

-A short talk on the origins and evolution of the CBG, including influential players on the current scene

-A demonstration of different types of cigar box guitars and basic playing techniques

-Step-by-step guidance as you build your own fully playable electric cigar box guitar

-Make your own bottle-neck slide from a recycled wine bottle

-Finish the day by playing your creation!

No previous woodworking or musical experience is required. All tools and materials are provided with the option to purchase a pick-up and jack to adapt your guitar into an electric CBG at home.

Whether you’re a music lover, maker, or just up for trying something completely different, this is a fun, creative, and rewarding experience. You’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind instrument, a new skill, and a story to tell.

What to expect

Time at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all and provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors plus the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas and experiences.

There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to!

Arrive in time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning your session at the appointed time. There will be a mid-session break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. All refreshments are included.

Finish time is given as a target – there are occasions when the session may overrun so do let us know if you need to be away promptly.
