Chris Moss makes stunning 3D open-wire pieces of sculpture, large and small. Her chicken wire bird workshops are one of our most popular workshops. During this 2 day workshop, Chris gives you a chance to capture one of the most charismatic of animals, the hare. Learn from her how to use chicken wire to make a beautiful hare suitable for inside or out. A hare of approximately 20 inches high, which can either stand alone or be spiked into a lawn or border, is usually achievable on this 2 day workshop

– Find out about the materials and equipment needed
– Use images to help your design
– Learn the techniques needed to create 3D shapes in chicken wire
– Discover the likely problems and how to solve them
– Find out about the options for decorating / finishing your sculpture

Please note there is a £15 material charge payable on the day.

What to expect

Days at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all and provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors plus the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas and experiences. You can even leave us to clear up the mess! There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to.

Arrive in time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits on day one. Begin your session at the appointed time and there will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Each day lunch will be around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a homemade 2 course lunch each day. The main course will be delicious but don’t overdo it as the puds are usually worth waiting for! There will be a further afternoon break with the most wonderful cakes from Roots & Fruits Home Bakery, a North Yorkshire micro-bakery producing handmade bread and cakes. All food and refreshments are included in the price of the workshop and providing we have notice, we are happy to cater for any dietary needs.

Finish time is given as a target – there is some flexibility depending on how your work is progressing. Depending on the tutor and the group, start times follow on days can be flexible too.

We aim for your time with us to be a real treat… of course you could always learn a new skill in a shed or a draughty village hall with a curly sandwich, but we want you to have more fun than that! So we make it a day being looked after, with good food, good company and great inspiration!

What you’ll need to bring with you

Despite your best efforts, chicken wire will inevitably snag on textiles so please wear something that you don't mind getting a pulled thread in! Clothes that cover-up are ideal - trousers and long sleeved top to protect your arms and legs - a thick apron would also be good protection. Wear closed shoes not sandals too! Don't forget your specs if you need glasses for close work!

All other safety gear and materials will be provided.

If you have any pictures or photos that you would like to base your sculpture on, bring them along. However, there will be plenty of images available.
