Create a painterly landscape using the wet felting technique.

On this one-day workshop you will be guided through the steps Valérie uses when creating her own felt artwork. You will be encouraged to explore the qualities and behaviours of wool fibres, silk threads and fabrics through the wet-felting process. Working from your own starting point such as a favourite photograph, painting, collage, you will develop your piece gradually, applying fibres, threads and inserts in fine layers. At the end of the day, you can expect to take away with you a (mostly) finished felt artwork.

This workshop is suitable for all levels of ability from beginners to experienced felters, and only requires that you engage your own creativity.

Please note there is a £6 material charge payable on the day.

What to expect

Time at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all. We provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors and the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas. You can even leave us to clear up the mess! There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to.

We encourage you to arrive at 9.30am. This will allow time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning workshops at 10am. There will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Lunch is usually around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a delicious homemade 2 course lunch. There will be a further afternoon break with tea or coffee and cake. All food and refreshments are included in the price of your workshop.

The finish time given is a target. There are occasions when the session may overrun so do let us know if you need to be away promptly.

We aim for your day to be a real treat. You could always learn a new skill in a shed or a draughty village hall with a curly sandwich, but we want you to have more fun than that! So we make sure we provide a day where you will be looked after, with good food, good company and great inspiration!

What you’ll need to bring with you

Equipment to bring:
• Plastic cup with handle or spray bottle
• Basin (to fit in microwave)
• 2 small size towels + 1 medium/large towel
• Felting palm (only if you have one)
• Fabric scissors
• Pointy tweezers (only if you have them)
• Ruler/ pen / notebook
• Plastic bag

All other necessary materials and equipment required are provided. However students are more than welcome to bring their favourite wet felting tools, wool fibres and open mesh fabrics to work with.

Preparation:
It is always a worthwhile exercise to take the time to consider ideas ahead of a workshop day, though not essential, as Valerie will bring along plenty of photographs to inspire you if needed. If you have the chance, you should gather some ideas/inspiration for your felted piece - this could be a photograph of a favourite view or landscape, an artwork or collage, colours/patterns you particularly love; anything at all you find inspiring. That said, be open to the fact you may not actually wish to use any of it on the day - and that would be perfectly fine too!
