On this intensive 1 day workshop with Claire Humphries, you will learn how to sew your own casual messenger bag in your own choice of fabric. Under Claire’s guidance you will explore adding pockets to the lining and what to use to stiffen the fabric to help with the structure of the bag. You can expect a slightly longer day than usual. You can keep your design simple but if you want to incorporate all the bells and whistles, you can expect to work quite hard!

On the day there will be the stiffening, webbing for straps and a magnetic catch all provided. The choice of external fabric and the lining fabric are entirely up to you!  You will need to purchase 1.10m of a heavy-weight external fabric such as denim, canvas or wool.  Also a lighter weight fabric will be needed for the lining such as cotton, this lining fabric should be selected to compliment the outer external fabric.

UNLESS YOU A VERY CONFIDENT SEWER, A PLAIN FABRIC WITHOUT THE NEED FOR PATTERN MATCHING IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

Make a practical bag that will suit your own personal style.

***YOU WILL NEED TO ENSURE YOUR MACHINE IS IN WORKING ORDER IN GOOD TIME BEFORE THE DAY – CHECK YOU HAVE ALL THE RIGHT CABLES & ANY ATTACHMENTS***

Please note there is a £12 material charge payable on the day. This is a slight increase on the amount originally published

What to expect

Time at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all and provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors plus the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas and experiences. You can even leave us to clear up the mess! There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to.

Arrive in time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning your session at the appointed time. There will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Lunch is usually around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a homemade 2 course lunch. The main course will be delicious but don’t overdo it as the puds are usually worth waiting for! There will be a further afternoon break with the most wonderful cakes from Roots & Fruits Home Bakery, a North Yorkshire micro-bakery producing handmade bread and cakes. All food and refreshments are included in the price of the workshop.

Finish time is given as a target – there are occasions when the session may overrun so do let us know if you need to be away promptly.

We aim for your day to be a real treat… of course you could always learn a new skill in a shed or a draughty village hall with a curly sandwich, but we want you to have more fun than that! So we make it a day being looked after, with good food, good company and great inspiration!

What you’ll need to bring with you

Sewing machine and manual (PLEASE check it is in good working order)
Basic sewing kit: Small scissors, cutting out scissors, quick unpick, pins, needles, thread, tape measure.
Your choice of fabrics and matching thread as described above.

UNLESS YOU A VERY CONFIDENT SEWER, A PLAIN FABRIC WITHOUT THE NEED FOR PATTERN MATCHING IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

“Obviously highly skilled and experienced, Claire guided us really well. I was a complete beginner and she gave clear instructions and good encouragement. I enjoyed the whole experience , the expertise, the company and the lunch. I will definitely be back.”
