Ever been told you were rubbish at art? Couldn’t draw? This workshop is the antidote to that. Smear, spray and splodge your way back into an artistic way of thinking, and integrate it with all your usual art and crafty hobbies. Learn how to get going with an Art Journal….

Art journaling is a therapeutic and no rules way to embrace your inner child and get happy (and messy) along the way. Combining a traditional journal and an artistic canvas, art journaling has been described as therapy, the shy artist’s outlet and a mixed media springboard.

Learn different ways to get colour on a page, combine with your own images, stamps, photographs or sketches, and then annotate (or journal) to make each page your own individual work of art!

What to expect

Time at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all. We provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors and the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas. You can even leave us to clear up the mess! There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to.

We encourage you to arrive at 9.30am. This will allow time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning workshops at 10am. There will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Lunch is usually around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a delicious homemade 2 course lunch. There will be a further afternoon break with tea or coffee and cake. All food and refreshments are included in the price of your workshop.

The finish time given is a target. There are occasions when the session may overrun so do let us know if you need to be away promptly.

We aim for your day to be a real treat. You could always learn a new skill in a shed or a draughty village hall with a curly sandwich, but we want you to have more fun than that! So we make sure we provide a day where you will be looked after, with good food, good company and great inspiration!

What you’ll need to bring with you

Art journaling is all about using things that mean something to you and reflect where you are and what you have been doing or feeling. So bring any objects you feel do this - e.g. tickets from clothes, old book pages, maps, images or words from magazines or newspapers or quotations that you like. Any old photographs are great but preferably laser printed onto paper, rather inkjet printed though inkjet prints are OK as long as they don't get too wet! Sarah will advise on how they might incorporated.

Wear clothes you don't mind messing up - we have aprons but if you prefer to bring your own, feel free.

We have lots of resources but if you have any of the following they will be useful and save waiting for resources!

Scissors
Permanent pen (Faber Castell Pitt, Pilot or similar)
Any art materials you may have such as acrylic paints, pastels, watercolour pencils or crayons.
Household objects that could be used for stamping with paint, eg, bottle lids, foam or rubber stamps
Things that could be sprayed through, eg stencils, masks.

If you already have a journal that you want to use, bring it along otherwise plenty of watercolour paper will be available.
