Are you desperate to work en plein air with your pastels? Join talented pastel artist Jo Garlick for this workshop and learn more about how to successfully use pastels outdoors.
On this course you will get the opportunity to work en plein air at a local venue. You will learn about what to carry with you and the different ways you could use your pastels outdoors. This course is designed for people with some pastel painting experience, however, it is not essential. You will learn about composition, mark making and drawing techniques and how to create interesting and expressive landscape paintings.
Please be aware that there will be a short walk to the place we will be working. You will need to make sure you can carry all of you materials, etc.
If the weather is against us we will remain at ArtisOn and will work from reference photos.
Please note there is a £5 material charge payable on the day
What to expect
Time at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all and provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors plus the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas and experiences. You can even leave us to clear up the mess! There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to.
Arrive in time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning your session at the appointed time. There will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Lunch is usually around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a homemade 2 course lunch. The main course will be delicious but don’t overdo it as the puds are usually worth waiting for! There will be a further afternoon break with the most wonderful cakes from Roots & Fruits Home Bakery, a North Yorkshire micro-bakery producing handmade bread and cakes. All food and refreshments are included in the price of the workshop.
Finish time is given as a target – there are occasions when the session may overrun so do let us know if you need to be away promptly.
We aim for your day to be a real treat… of course you could always learn a new skill in a shed or a draughty village hall with a curly sandwich, but we want you to have more fun than that! So we make it a day being looked after, with good food, good company and great inspiration!
What you’ll need to bring with you
You should bring any hard or soft pastels you own (pastel pencils are ok as well) and any pastel paper that you have. Wear comfortable, practical clothes and shoes and a raincoat. Other items that can be useful are: umbrella, kneeling mat (to sit on) plastic portfolio (or something to keep you pictures in – this can also double up as a drawing board), rucksack, drawing board (or a piece of foamcore), freestanding easel (if you would like to work standing up), masking tape, bulldog clips, small sketchbook wipes/ tea towel. If you are unsure, bring it anyway and we can decide if we need it!
Jo will also provide a variety of pastels papers for you to try (and will discuss the best ones for working with outdoors). She will also bring a variety of pastels but please bear in mind that these will be harder to share outdoors. Reference images will also be provided if we need them.
Please note that there is a material cost of £5-10 depending on what you choose to use during the course.
If there are any items you don’t have and feel you will need, please let us know as we may be able to provide them.
