Heather Lewis is a professional hand embroidery artist, tutor and fellow of the Royal School of Needlework based in York, UK with over twenty years’ experience.

Heather graduated from the Royal School of Needlework apprenticeship course in 2002 where she perfected the traditional techniques and skills of a hand embroidery artist. During her training on the RSN apprenticeship she gained valuable experience in all aspects of hand embroidery, but one of Heather’s passions is in the creation and preservation of vestments and ecclesiastical embroidery. During her eight years working in the Studios at the RSN, Heather helped with the production of altar frontals for several Cathedrals and also taught specialist church groups. Her most recent book; ‘Ecclesiastical Embroidery’ was published by the Crowood Press in 2024. Heather’s first book ‘RSN Embroidered Boxes techniques, projects and pure inspiration’ was published by Search Press in 2020. Her work can also be found in several other embroidery books.

In 2023, Heather was honoured to be part of the embroidery studio team at the Royal School of Needlework who worked on items for the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla, including The Queen’s Robe of Estate and the Anointing Screen.

Heather grew up in the Yorkshire Dales and loves to use that as inspiration for her pieces and particularly
enjoys combining several techniques within her designs. She now teaches hand embroidery to many groups both online and in-person and produces her own range of embroidery kits, where she is constantly expanding the range. She is passionate about passing on her skills to all levels of ability, to both beginners and experienced stitchers’ alike.
