You don’t get many opportunities to experience the thrill of working with red hot glass with a professional glass maker. For the past thirty years Tim and Maureen Simon have created classic studio glass pieces for visitors and buyers all over the world from their studio at Uredale Glass in Masham. Experience two red hot studio sessions with the furnace where you’ll have a hands-on experience, punctuated by demonstrations from Tim with a break for a lovely ArtisOn homemade lunch.

The skills required to produce items worth keeping are obviously far greater than you can pick up in such a short time. So, Tim gets you to participate at key stages of the process and “glues it all together” so you are able to achieve successful pieces of glass. You’ll have control of things like selecting colours, heating the glass, casting hot glass and a chance to have a go at parts of the glass blowing process.

There will be only 2 people per session and you will alternate between spectating and doing. Due to the requirements of social distancing and health and safety, one person will be seated while the other participates. Since the Covid-19 crisis, the sharing of glass blowing tubes is no longer possible. This may restrict the extent of your hands-on blowing experience. But the full day gives you plenty of experience in handling hot glass and a collection of items that you have had a hand in such as baubles, small vases, paperweights and decorations in colours of your choosing.

Please note that the items made need to be cooled in the kiln overnight and can be collected the next day, or if necessary, posted on.

What to expect

Time at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all and provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors plus the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas and experiences. You can even leave us to clear up the mess! There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to.

Arrive in time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning your session at the appointed time. There will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Lunch is usually around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a homemade 2 course lunch. The main course will be delicious but don’t overdo it as the puds are usually worth waiting for! There will be a further afternoon break with the most wonderful cakes from Roots & Fruits Home Bakery, a North Yorkshire micro-bakery producing handmade bread and cakes. All food and refreshments are included in the price of the workshop.

Finish time is given as a target – there are occasions when the session may overrun so do let us know if you need to be away promptly.

We aim for your day to be a real treat… of course you could always learn a new skill in a shed or a draughty village hall with a curly sandwich, but we want you to have more fun than that! So we make it a day being looked after, with good food, good company and great inspiration!

What you’ll need to bring with you

You will be working in a hot environment with molten glass so make sure you wear robust clothing - jeans or thick trousers, stout shoes etc. Especially AVOID synthetic fabrics on BOTH clothing and shoes.

If you have an old woollen sock, please bring it along, these come in very handy as heat protectors. All other materials and equipment will be provided.
