Come and try the Japanese art of Kurinuki with potter Joseph Ludkin from Croft Pottery.

Kurinuki means ‘To Hollow’ and is the Japanese technique of carving objects such as bowls, vases, cups and boxes etc. from a block of clay. Kurinuki techniques are a wonderful way to create unique forms and rugged, tactile surface textures. Josephs Kurinuki work often reflects the landscape around him and has been exhibited internationally as well as at the famous Leach Pottery in Cornwall.

On this course you will learn how to use a range of tools to carve and decorate clay to build objects of your choice.

– You will be introduced to examples of Kurinuki to inspire your ideas.
– There will be a morning workshop to explore carving techniques and applying texture using found objects.
– Joseph will demonstrate how he uses ‘slips’ (coloured wet clay) to add extra detail to his work.
– In the afternoon you will design and make an object of your choice in either Black or Buff clay.

Your work will be left to air dry and then fired and glazed for you. Glazing options will be discussed on the day.

Please note that your clay sculpture will be left for firing at the end of the day. There is an additional materials and firing charge of £15 which is payable on the day. Your sculpture can be collected or posted to you (additional postage charged at cost).

What to expect

Time at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all. We provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors and the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas. You can even leave us to clear up the mess! There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to.

We encourage you to arrive at 9.30am. This will allow time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning workshops at 10am. There will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Lunch is usually around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a delicious homemade 2 course lunch. There will be a further afternoon break with tea or coffee and cake. All food and refreshments are included in the price of your workshop.

The finish time given is a target. There are occasions when the session may overrun so do let us know if you need to be away promptly.

We aim for your day to be a real treat. You could always learn a new skill in a shed or a draughty village hall with a curly sandwich, but we want you to have more fun than that! So we make sure we provide a day where you will be looked after, with good food, good company and great inspiration!

What you’ll need to bring with you

All materials and equipment will be provided but please dress prepared to get messy.
Please bring with you items with textures to use on the surface of the clay such as wall papers with texture or flock
Rope, macrame, Lace or fabrics with interesting texture
Natural objects such as shells, rocks, wood/bark etc.
