A unique and exciting chance to create your own designs and have them digitally printed onto fabric which you will use to make a gorgeous collection of hanging decorations. Designer, Monica Gabb will guide you through the design process during this one day session. Your designs will be sent to be professionally digitally printed and returned to us ready for collection or posting when you will be able to make up the decorations at home.
Monica’s own designs are based on abstract birds. Be inspired by her and learn how to create your own designs – based on birds, animals or another subject of your choice. At the end of this day you will have created a design and reviewed the process of sewing, embellishing and finishing several decorations. You should have enough fabric to make 6-12 decorations depending on your design.
During this session you will:
– Learn about design, the process of simplification and how to define the shape.
– Making templates and prototypes out of spare fabric.
– Additional elements – ears/beak etc.
– Exploring shapes, pattern and composition
– Compose collage, marks and shapes to create your final fabric design.
– See how to take a scan of your design and test on paper
Monica will provide the embellishing materials and instructions on how to make up you decorations. She will then arrange for your designs to be sent away to be digitally printed and you can collect from ArtisOn or arrange to post.
Please note the material charge will include the digital printing of your fabric which will be approx £20 for a metre. More may be ordered.

What to expect
Time at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all. We provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create. You can expect a warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors and the chance to meet like-minded people keen to share ideas. You can even leave us to clear up the mess! There will usually be two workshops going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the other workshop is up to.
We encourage you to arrive at 9.30am. This will allow time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning workshops at 10am. There will be a mid-morning break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Lunch is usually around 12:45 for about 45 mins – you can expect a delicious homemade 2 course lunch. There will be a further afternoon break with tea or coffee and cake. All food and refreshments are included in the price of your workshop.
The finish time given is a target. There are occasions when the session may overrun so do let us know if you need to be away promptly.
We aim for your day to be a real treat. You could always learn a new skill in a shed or a draughty village hall with a curly sandwich, but we want you to have more fun than that! So we make sure we provide a day where you will be looked after, with good food, good company and great inspiration!
